May 26, 2010

Linda got her endotracheal tube removed this morning, so she can whisper to us now, though her vocal cords are still mostly paralyzed from the process. She has had her first dose of anti-rejection medication, and is strong and resting comfortably. Her color is already getting pink, and the "liver spots" on her skin are disappearing quickly after only two days with a new liver.

Friday, after the swelling in her abdomen from the surgery has subsided, the surgeons will take her back to the operating room and close the fascia layers in her abdomen, and put the final surgical staples in her skin to permanently close her incisions. After that there will be a few weeks of adjusting the dosages of her new medications, physical therapy to get her back on her feet, and frequent blood tests for a time before she can go home.

Tomorrow they say she will be able to come off the dialysis machine, and have a lot of her catheters and central lines taken out. She looks forward to every little sign of progress, and her feisty attitude is already returning. The only complaint now is that she's not yet allowed to have solid food to eat.

Once the weekend arrives she should be able to talk to people on the phone, so feel free to call on Saturday or Sunday if you want to.

I want to thank everyone for their emotional support, kind thoughts and prayers for both of us through all these difficult times.
