May 25, 2010

Linda's transplant surgery is completed and she is back in the ICU. She is still on the ventilator now, but will probably wake up and come off it in an hour or so. The nurses are cleaning her up now.

Her urine production is very good, and the doctors say that is a good omen for complete recovery. Dr. Tector says there was a lot of bleeding during the operation due to the completely deteriorated condition of the liver they took out, and she was given 15 units of red cells plus some frozen plasma and platelets during the operation. They closed her abdominal skin, but not the muscle layers. They will give her three days or so for all the internal swelling to subside, then go back in and close the fascia, and installation of her new liver will be complete.

After that, she will be here for a couple weeks while the dosages of her anti-rejection medications are adjusted to the proper levels. After that we will work on the arrangements for bringing her home where she can rest up a while before she is ready to go back to work. I'll continue keeping everyone up to date on her progress as time marches along later today, but for now I'm going to try to get a few hours sleep while the doctors and nurses finish waking her up.
